<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I built my own custom designed fuzz pedal that I've called the Fuzboz.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">It came out of my frustrations at trying to build a Supersonic Fuzz Gun, which is a damned hard pedal to get right due to having to get very specifically valued transistors.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I started with a very basic beginner's circuit, and added my own modifications to it, to make my own unique pedal, that I'm rather proud of, and very happy with.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I started with the Colorsound One Knob Fuzz... which is a great pedal to build first because the entire circuit is explained in this one image.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO92QWuwsdyczS7x8VjgPm9YYNGYDT1BJIjD2-dg42PuDcKfAPrjDJNVKGcn-2METGm6Cu1LuXdFrzVuHRXIohDyOG9upoz3KNAgIwiVxieB5l8QuwxCWgiFs9zw4JzciqRG_UMNKnQaEJ/s1600/COLORSOUND_ONE_KNOB_FUZZ.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="315" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO92QWuwsdyczS7x8VjgPm9YYNGYDT1BJIjD2-dg42PuDcKfAPrjDJNVKGcn-2METGm6Cu1LuXdFrzVuHRXIohDyOG9upoz3KNAgIwiVxieB5l8QuwxCWgiFs9zw4JzciqRG_UMNKnQaEJ/s400/COLORSOUND_ONE_KNOB_FUZZ.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I fiddled around with ideas of how to fit it into the small enclosure I had. Pretty easy with only one knob! The knob on this design simply specifies the Output Level of the fuzz. Inside the circuit, for simplicity sake, the fuzz amount is hard wired to full blast. It's a great rough nasty sounding fuzz, straight out of the cage.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwonMN83AKJsMV8xHYV_VL7kc3qbNZ7pgDyYHKsWJ3ubPwqZTiVOHLmGAZrQI-F6hblVgWJwWPwaOlfDGsANWliUUBHsGHAbRwIYwl-iTjw8HXRNfIn8X21lWgei1h2fgYxcXAARLGkr_U/s1600/01_Colorsound.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwonMN83AKJsMV8xHYV_VL7kc3qbNZ7pgDyYHKsWJ3ubPwqZTiVOHLmGAZrQI-F6hblVgWJwWPwaOlfDGsANWliUUBHsGHAbRwIYwl-iTjw8HXRNfIn8X21lWgei1h2fgYxcXAARLGkr_U/s400/01_Colorsound.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; text-align: start;">After my failed attempts at making a Supersonic Fuzz Gun, I really wanted to have success with this pedal, and to learn something along the way. So I decided to breadboard the design, rather than soldering it together straight away. This involves sticking the components into a "breadboard", without solder, so you can test it out, and muck around with the components. I'm really glad I did this, because I learned a lot experimenting with different value resistors along the way.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhikns4qK6WP6eAgsUfpl1E-YBeaTic5Outvx4jX_QADa9UhqoCC1XnnSGm8STYY5uUsWgNMtrshUGsxr6U1B_225qsoVIu1lusX_ijD-JSqkLdEeKH9xtb3tGXXoEp_EgwlwcleI88o81/s1600/02_Breadboard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhikns4qK6WP6eAgsUfpl1E-YBeaTic5Outvx4jX_QADa9UhqoCC1XnnSGm8STYY5uUsWgNMtrshUGsxr6U1B_225qsoVIu1lusX_ijD-JSqkLdEeKH9xtb3tGXXoEp_EgwlwcleI88o81/s400/02_Breadboard.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; text-align: start;">There was discussion about whether one of the resistors should be an 820 or an 82. I ended up going with a low value resistor in that position, so I could dial in a very lofi early 70's fuzz at the bottom end of the Bias spectrum, because I like a mellower sound at times. The higher you turn the Bias, the more high-gain and modern the fuzz sound. I figured, why not let the user start off real low, and dial it up as high as they want, rather than force them to have a high gain sound and dial up from there.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; text-align: start;">A goal for me was to make a pedal with us much variety and user control as possible, without making it unreliable or difficult to use. I feel I've ended up with a pedal that lets the user find early 70's lofi fuzz sounds, through to high-gain distortion sort of tones, through to fizzed out high-bias fizzly bit-crunch sort of tones.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJtvYKWLko6tkNheFly4cHJ_OoJNzUsgcr66YWQWCCDcG-5XMaYqdmQm3bK3R3aPBnTpXyNv3TktMJD5Z00ufm-WaIq83vi_e76qp1nBUIzKdRoOfc6JD3JwjecRJ8zloWuLTC4cyyhsR5/s1600/03_Breadboard_Close.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJtvYKWLko6tkNheFly4cHJ_OoJNzUsgcr66YWQWCCDcG-5XMaYqdmQm3bK3R3aPBnTpXyNv3TktMJD5Z00ufm-WaIq83vi_e76qp1nBUIzKdRoOfc6JD3JwjecRJ8zloWuLTC4cyyhsR5/s400/03_Breadboard_Close.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">But I'm getting ahead of myself. After getting the one knob version working, I really wanted more control of the sounds, because it only had a Volume knob, basically.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">So I noticed that people on forums were talking about some obvious changes to make, such as adding a Gain potentiometer, rather than a fixed 1k resistor for full Gain.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">And then, you can add in a Bias potentiometer to vary the Bias of the transistors. I don't even know what that means, as such, but I knew I wanted to do it. So I found on forums how to swizzle things around and get that in there, too.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />
Off my own bat, while working on the breadboard, I realised that changing capacitor values would let more or less bass frequencies through (after a friend of mine named Ben told me that capacitors act as high pass filters). So I added another footswitch that switches between two different capacitors. I call this the BASS CUT footswitch. When you activate it, it cuts a bunch of bass and thins out the sound. Press it again to boom back in at full power. It's a good way to achieve a more retro 60's sort of sound, especially if you also pull back the Input Attenuation a bit as well.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqeqI5qR7bQhv9MBu3ShV1AP-2Y4MsVXl1drZLmBwl4_2y5zGVbpzf9IT-u6fXVPN3XUsJrfEgG3mkUdriaJFawyWfUlllcvPyiAgvMMUwNHHG4sA0O_ln5fBmevDckmj3HIKoFyJr71jJ/s1600/04_MoreKnobs_TheFuzboz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqeqI5qR7bQhv9MBu3ShV1AP-2Y4MsVXl1drZLmBwl4_2y5zGVbpzf9IT-u6fXVPN3XUsJrfEgG3mkUdriaJFawyWfUlllcvPyiAgvMMUwNHHG4sA0O_ln5fBmevDckmj3HIKoFyJr71jJ/s400/04_MoreKnobs_TheFuzboz.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">So then I was done, and ready to assemble the pedal. It was sounding pretty groovy on the breadboard! I drew up a rough veroboard layout with my modifications in there, and got to work!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I also decided to make a proper digital version of my veroboard layout, so I had a proper record of how it worked, so I could make more in future, as I'd like to sell a limited run of the pedals once they're fully ready for the wild! It also meant that I could make changes and iteration more easily, without having to keep redrawing things each time.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Another design goal was to make the veroboard as small as possible, so I could keep the enclosure size as small as possible. I'm a guy who likes to have about 10 pedals on a pedalboard, so keeping each pedal small is important. But at the end of the day, I think this pedal (as it continued to evolve - as you'll see below), would be better off in an enclosure about twice the size. Easier to build the pedal, and easier for the user to confidently stomp the different switches, etc.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Once all the wires start to go in, it really gets quite messy. I need to get better at my wiring techniques! And I think I need to redesign things to tidy things up in general!</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">To my chagrin, once I built it into the pedal, it had a much stronger sound than it had previously on the breadboard! I think because all the connections are cleaner, and the wires are neater, etc, the actual sound of the pedal comes out with more power. Which annoyed me! Because it had lost a certain wild fizzly sound that it'd had on the breadboard. It used to have a bit of a Supersonic Fuzz Gun sound on the breadboard in fact, which I've never gotten back. But I started developing some ideas to get some of the elements I wanted back. To mimic the "lossiness" of the breadboard layout I'd had (with really long wires dangling and criss crossing everywhere), I decided to add an Input attenuation stage that would reduce the level of the input, to try to pull away from the high-gain distortion sound that the pedal was making, even at the lowest settings.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I kept tinkering, and was much happier once I'd added an Input Attenuation potentiometer that let me reduce the level of the guitar signal coming into the pedal, thus giving it a more low-gain retro sound. And I added the Voltage Starve potentiometer to allow for more fizzly shit-out kinda tones, which can be fun and gruesome.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixZD5Ee6rlcv7AlGD1eIOX0GZtvEqhKUvl3-GLV1-V7HnVuSKTHme7k_-s-otxwZHi9fhHSb0_B1tGZLwrU-DR629ysUhRfLugUcXUI9XAGEP1Qxy4FmqGE-iR2sbl7vPkNr2jwJmvvkon/s1600/16_TooFull.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixZD5Ee6rlcv7AlGD1eIOX0GZtvEqhKUvl3-GLV1-V7HnVuSKTHme7k_-s-otxwZHi9fhHSb0_B1tGZLwrU-DR629ysUhRfLugUcXUI9XAGEP1Qxy4FmqGE-iR2sbl7vPkNr2jwJmvvkon/s400/16_TooFull.jpg" width="238" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The main problem with the pedal prototype as it stands, is that there's just too much going on for such a small enclosure. I want to build the Fuzboz Deluxe in a slightly larger size, and have the Input and Output jacks on the sides or top of the pedal. Currently they're on the bottom and getting in my way!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">It'd be much easier to build into a larger enclosure too.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">You can hear the Fuzboz pedal being used on an upcoming post, "Harrisonville".</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />
PS: This whole project was sort of a procrastination from working on my indie computer game projects. But it has so many overlaps and similarities to making computer games. They're both complex interactive logic circuits. And I really enjoyed building this pedal, and each definitely taught me more about the other.</span></div>

</i></span></span></span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">I was playing my brother's old amp in Park Orchards. We call it "The Dr Who Amp", because it looks like it was made by the BBC special effects team, out of tin foil, or something.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">It sounds really crusty, like some old Beatles amp. so I was just playing around, and then everyone went out, and I was about to leave. And I thought, "I'm gonna record a quick song!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">I ran downstairs with my H4 Zoom set to Multitrack Mode, recorded a drum beat to the click track, then ran upstairs, and wanged out some guitar over it with the Dr Who Amp.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">Then I went home and threw some bass on there. Done! It's real scrappy! But another fun journey into the sounds of the late 60's.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">The structure of the song is a bit weird. I kinda like the Verse part the least, and it appears the most. Would chop and change it around a bit before making it into an actual song for a band format! I like the intro riff a lot, which re-appears at the end.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><br />

But the lovely Mario from <a href="http://www.broadcastworkshop.com/">Broadcast Workshop</a> in North Melbourne went to work on it, and got it all working nicely! Thanks Mario! It cost me another $300 there including a big roll of tape for making my own tape loops. I'm happy! I just wish it was a Varispeed unit. And I'd love to try a Valve model one day.</span><br />

Read on to see how to do it!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnCkiusP1jLSsC3Y4QifUWoYo-vq0KUw6JueFoz0jusrWEcw3kzALnJ6ioM-T_Fhe3ir38n4-1xRtra4bf5Qav-FbYB050SpEegKcLi8LB8JbkHF_kuVXt5BnAmIz35qBlM26bvEGAzRa3/s1600/BCR2000ControlsMicroKorg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnCkiusP1jLSsC3Y4QifUWoYo-vq0KUw6JueFoz0jusrWEcw3kzALnJ6ioM-T_Fhe3ir38n4-1xRtra4bf5Qav-FbYB050SpEegKcLi8LB8JbkHF_kuVXt5BnAmIz35qBlM26bvEGAzRa3/s320/BCR2000ControlsMicroKorg.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I found the Edit Matrix on the MicroKorg a bit hard to follow visually, so I made a custom overlay for the face of it to make things easier (see <a href="https://bit.ly/gb0xfZ">MicroKorg Customface</a>).</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">But I thought I'd take it a step further! I wanted to be able to tweak more parameters at once, so I could adjust more parameters immediately and simultaneously (like on a fully featured synthesizer interface).</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3B3FclO0uBsiSCU5cmxPmMSyU1rkllB1uDNrtCAqELn4vLxnKzsX-zAANAttmNkelwkFgbPeW6NkKwv_IocmNFnygbYtdoujokC8IxDGnWIdJ8orAdtZGIztLQH1VTh36RxPNC3Lj0Iw2/s1600/BCR2000-WithOverlay-Example.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3B3FclO0uBsiSCU5cmxPmMSyU1rkllB1uDNrtCAqELn4vLxnKzsX-zAANAttmNkelwkFgbPeW6NkKwv_IocmNFnygbYtdoujokC8IxDGnWIdJ8orAdtZGIztLQH1VTh36RxPNC3Lj0Iw2/s320/BCR2000-WithOverlay-Example.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">So I decided to buy a Behringer BCR2000, and see if I could map all the knobs and buttons to various parameters on the MicroKorg. It turns out that you can! And it does a pretty good job of it!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">You'll need to follow the document to program the settings into your BCR2000. It basically uses MIDI CC (Control Change) values to speak to the MicroKorg. You don't really need to do anything to the MicroKorg - it will automatically communicate back to the BCR2000 when you tweak knobs on the MicroKorg interface.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">You simply follow the instructions in the document, and save it as a Preset on the BCR2000, and you're done! That'll be saved on there permanently, and it's ready to go as soon as you turn them on and plug them together. You just need a BCR2000, a MicroKorg and </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">two MIDI cables</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">.</span><br />

</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">UPDATE: If you don't want to program it in manually, you can download <a href="http://bit.ly/gxwbr1"><b>BCRFEdit</b></a>, a user made application for importing, exporting, creating and editing your own presets for the BCR2000 (it seems much better than the application provided by Behringer), and you can use this to transfer my preset straight to your BCR2000 without having to manually make all the settings yourself. You can <a href="http://bit.ly/hPMgAy"><b>download the SysEx file for my Preset here</b></a>. Enjoy! Just be careful not to overwrite or lose any of your own presets when using BCFREdit.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">Help Wanted!</span></b></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">I'd LOVE it if anyone could help me with the final piece to the puzzle! My only remaining question is, <b>how do I get the MicroKorg to send all the values over to the BCR2000, each time you switch to a new "instrument" on the MicroKorg? </b></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">Everything else works 100%. I believe you are meant to be able to make the BCR2000 send a Data Dump Request to the MicroKorg, thus receiving all the new values, so the BCR2000 is lit up to reflect the values on the MicroKorg. You should also be able to set up the MicroKorg to send a Data Dump over to the BCR2000. But I haven't been able to get either operation to work. </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> Please help if you know how!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I'd love to hear what people think of it! It's well worth doing, if you want to be able to really tweak the sounds live!</span><br />

It's nice doing stuff on the four track, and limiting yourself to four tracks, and the song's done! Keeps things simple, and lets you just do sketches, in stead of getting carried away and tinkering away for hours with layers and layers of sounds, and infinitesimal editings.</span></span></span></span><br />

</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">I used the Breakbeats sounds on the TD20. I really like those vinyl sounding samples. Pretty much the whole song came out of the sound of that kit. I sat down for a quick drum during a moment when all the housemates were out, and I immediately loved the sound of that Breakbeats kit. I decided to record a quick song on the four track. I messed with the tape speed, and went, "Woahh! There's that cool drum n bass sound, when you double the speed of the drums", and the rest all went from there.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><br />

</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">Because I halved the speed while recording, I had to try to play especially deep so that it maintained </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">bass phatness</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"> when sped up again. So I played the song in Dm, detuned the bass' E to a D, and played the synth really really low and deep, so that once it was sped up, it sounded pretty much like a normal octave phat bass sound. I've learnt a bit while doing this quick song, so I'd like to do some more, and really make it sweet! There's definitely some lamoid bits in this one, where I stuff up a beat, or just get the lengths of sections wrong because I was playing slowish, and I would lose track of counting bars and things!</span><br />
<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I found it really hard to use the MicroKorg, because it's so difficult to read the lines of controls under each knob, in relation to where you had each Edit Select knob positioned. It did my head in! Korg should have at least drawn lines for each row to help the ol' eye-balls. Or even better, color coded the different rows in some way.</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">So... I created my own OVERLAY in Photoshop and stuck it over the front! It's only for the Synth mode, and doesn't cover the Vocoder, but that's fine for me. Most of the controls are shared between the two anyway. If I ever want to tweak a vocoder setting one day, I'll have to figure out a solution, but let's face it, most people must be using the synth 95% of the time, and mostly using vocoder presets anyway. (That's how I'm justifying it to myself, anyway...)</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Personally, I think my overlay makes things much easier and more intuitive, and therefore more fun and playful! </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I'd like to know if anyone else struggles with the MicroKorg interface, and if this helps them. I've color coded mine (with pencil, after printing it out!) so you can see which knob settings correlate to which row of functions. That was the main goal for me!</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">You'll have to figure out how to print it the right size. It should fit perfectly if you get it right! Print it in landscape on A4 and see how you go.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">You'll have to color it in yourself, too! I was going to color it in Photoshop, but I only have a black and white printer at home, so I just colored it myself with pencils. I used the same color family for related sections (all LFOs are blue, OSCs are warm colors, ARPEGs are purpley colors), and left a few sections white to keep it from getting muddy with colors (the Patch section, GLOBAL, MIDI, and Voice).</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">To stick the overlays over the dials, just cut each one out separately, then cut straight up from the bottom-middle with scissors, then cut away the grey circle. Voila! Now just slide it down behind the knobs and sticky tape it all into place.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Let me know if you put one on yours! I'd love to see your coloring job. :)</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Listen to <b><i>Contemplations</i></b></span></span><br /><br />
<audio controls="controls" src="http://muzboz.com/PunkNewWave/Downloads/MurrayLorden-PunkNewWave-Contemplations-(v060).mp3"></audio>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">or download </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"><a href="http://muzboz.com/PunkNewWave/Downloads/MurrayLorden-PunkNewWave-Contemplations-(v060).mp3"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #3333ff;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">Contemplations.mp3</span></span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"> (5mb)</span></span></span></span></div>
<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">This song came out of a few things coming together...</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">I wanted to do some palm muted guitar because I'd just started fiddling around with that technique, and I had a chord progression that I'd just come up with in the past few days, so I put them together.</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">I wanted to try a bunch of VSTs (virtual instruments), using my new and beloved Novation SL37 ReMOTE controller keyboard. Amongst these were a Commodore 64 sounding bleepy bloipy thing, and some strings that I wanted to use.</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">The saxophone came out of nowhere! That's a lie. My mum used to listen to a Kenny G tape on repeat in the car, for many years. I think he crept into my brain.</span></li>
</ul>
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">I recorded everything into the computer direct. No mics or amps!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">I put the 606 drum machine through a Vox Amplug AC30.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPLbZhURcFxmU8wLEW22ZVJUWgCozsvbuRfzAI-tjKEZ9TEAXK1II85BIGXWbqtvdppjm85mHLq-_B2Vaoad_6imQpf5Qlj_fc-ApG0xvEJJ5QpQGunPNGzkbYZZT3DuFTSrUlNqvSrzh6/s1600/IMG_0329-606.jpg" style="display: inline; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPLbZhURcFxmU8wLEW22ZVJUWgCozsvbuRfzAI-tjKEZ9TEAXK1II85BIGXWbqtvdppjm85mHLq-_B2Vaoad_6imQpf5Qlj_fc-ApG0xvEJJ5QpQGunPNGzkbYZZT3DuFTSrUlNqvSrzh6/s400/IMG_0329-606.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">Then I played in the guitar (on <i>Blue Meanie</i>, a Teisco SG copy), also through the amplug. The whole concept of the song was made up on the guitar, and I was using palm muting for the first time. It's got that Ratatat sound, with layered palm muted guitars.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBP4VRsTnpl3xXHBMs6WOYN0FGDSfR3yZiDlg8dAnfVmTVh068PyEZRQwTM4icxv07mT9ilYL4xPmYlOv8ZQv4s3rudHlc9fmp-qT4mSQmMjdSwoDSHDtlT22sZIr5m4avPcJ78htgckK_/s1600/IMG_0338-BlueMeanie.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBP4VRsTnpl3xXHBMs6WOYN0FGDSfR3yZiDlg8dAnfVmTVh068PyEZRQwTM4icxv07mT9ilYL4xPmYlOv8ZQv4s3rudHlc9fmp-qT4mSQmMjdSwoDSHDtlT22sZIr5m4avPcJ78htgckK_/s400/IMG_0338-BlueMeanie.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">Then I got to work with the Novation ReMOTE, just opening up various VSTs and seeing how they sound in the song, and recording those that worked best. I'm trying a whole bunch of free ones. There's some gold out there. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">These are the ones I used in the song:</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">DVS Saxophone for the sax.</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">Basic64 for the chippy Commodore 64 sounds.</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">Abakos for the big bassy sound in the choruses.</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">Matnitron Strings for the background strings sounds. Nice and simple, and sounds fairly realistic.</span></li>
</ul>

<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">...then added some Nord Electro clavichord, and Gonzales bass.</span><br />

</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Once I was happy with the bass and clav, it was time to mix the song. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">I sent the AUX output to a</span><span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"> Biyang Triverb and my Line 6 Echo Park.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">I also messed with the tape speed on the fly. I basically wanted to expose myself to the sorts of things you can do when you're using a totally analog bits of gear, instead of tapping and clicking away on a computer.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">After spending a bit of time in the digital multitracking domain, it was really nice to use an analog desk with hands on all the faders, panners, and auxiliary sends. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="" style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">I did a bunch of mixes of each of the two songs, trying different tape speeds and effects during each mix. Here's two versions of "Miasm" below...</span><br />
